Longtime Vinita resident W. Alvin Trissell, 90, entered the Kingdom of Heaven on Jan. 21, 2025 after a lengthy illness.
A native of Cordell, Okla., Mr. Trissell was born Sept. 28, 1934, the son of Jessie Earl and Ruby Jewell (Short) Trissell. He began his 46-year career with the Soil Conservation Service as a student trainee in Pawhuska in 1956. Alvin became a Range Conservationist in the Okmulgee office after graduating from Oklahoma State University in 1958, the year he married Evelyn D. (Schmitt) Trissell in Stillwater.
He subsequently was assigned to Soil Conservation offices in Okemah, Pryor and Guymon before moving with his family to Vinita in August 1968. He ended his lengthy career as a District Conservationist with the Vinita Field Service Center in March 2002. Mr. Trissell also was active in church and community affairs. The family joined Vinita’s First United Methodist Church after moving from Guymon in 1968. Alvin put his considerable woodworking skills to good purpose in 1983 creating the large cross that still adorns the church sanctuary. He also fashioned a cross for Luginbuel’s Funeral Home chapel. Alvin enjoyed making custom furniture for his grandchildren and Christmas wooden toys for the family’s grand and great-grandchildren, and extended his generosity in making and giving away toys to local youngsters during the Christmas season.
In 2023, the Vinita Lions Club awarded Trissell the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award, recognizing his 57 years of service to the local club’s civic programs. During the 1970s, he also served as a Troop leader with Vinita’s Boy Scouts Troop 67.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Trissell was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn D. Trissell, in 2023. He also was preceded by a sister, Lucille Williams in 2023 and a twin brother, Charles Alvie Trissell in 2022.
