Martin “Matt” Luther Mathews III, 75 years old, of Afton, passed away December 24, 2023, at Hillcrest Medical Center of Tulsa. He was born September 13, 1948, in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Martin Luther Mathews II and Juanita (Morrow) Mathews. He was educated at Jay Public Schools and continued his education at Oklahoma State University where he was on a football scholarship. Matt was injured in his freshman year, which ended his football career, but he was always a proud cowboy and a forever fan.
Matt was married to Vicki Rollins on October 21, 1976, in Las Vegas, Nevada. He worked as a Quality Control Supervisor for the Linde Corp. Matt was a member of the Cleora Community Church, in Cleora, Oklahoma, on Grand Lake. He loved Grand Lake and loved to gig, fish and hunt. Following an outstanding Jay High School football career, Matt was awarded a football scholarship to Oklahoma State University where he met John Ward who became a life-long friend. Together they were instrumental in starting and organizing the Green Country Giggers Association,which is still going strong today.
Above all, he loved his family. His wife, children, and grandchildren all had a special place in his heart, and he will be missed by all who knew him. Preceding Matt in death are his parents, John and Juanita Mathews, and a stepson Sonny Gene Ennis. He is survived by his loving wife Vicki of the home; a stepdaughter Jackie Ennis Pyatt, of Wentzville, Missouri; grandchildren, Lauren Anderson, Kaden Pyatt, Avery Pyatt, Reese Ennis, and Chandler Ennis; a brother, Nick Mathews, of Afton, Oklahoma; nieces Linsee Mathews, Brittany Mathews, Ashton Mathews; a Godson, John Henry Ward; Goddaughters, Gweneth Ward, and Locklyn Ward; other relatives and a host of friends.
A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 p.m., January 2, 2023, at the Cleora Community Church in Cleora, Oklahoma. Interment will follow at Ketchum Cemetery, in Ketchum, Oklahoma.
